Vanwall
This is the Airfix Vanwall slot car from the 1960's. The whole thing has been stripped down and cleaned. There's quite a bit of enhancement. The air intake on top of the bonnet has been opened out ( and there's a grill added inside the nose intake, but not visible in the photo ). The exhaust has been stripped of chrome, and repainted grey/black. The wing mirrors have also been stripped of chrome - they should be the body colour. The rear springs have been black-washed to bring out the detail. The driver needed some reshaping, and I've added goggles. I've also black-washed the panel lines and louvres. The 'wobbly' wheels are later NOS MRRC/Airfix ones. The excellent Vanwall decals are from Patto's Place. The white stripe around the nose is plain white decal sheet. The racing numbers are generic i.e. no particular real car.
Here's the mechanicals. I replaced the braids with new tinned racing braid, and I also made them overlength, folding up the extra. So, as the braids wear, some of the extra can be pulled through and the rubbish cut off - saves complete braid changes and / or soldering....
A bit more detailing here. I've added a partial steering wheel in the cockpit. There's some chrome foil to make the mirror part of the wing mirrors. Also, as the body is in top and bottom halves, I've scraped, sanded & polished the join, to minimise its visibility. The body has been left its original colour ( of the plastic ), but shined up with a coat of Klear acrylic floor polish, which also helps to hold down and blend in the number decals. Oh, and the rear tyres are Scalextric, as they're better proportioned that the original Airfix ones.
Here's the underside, showing the classic Airfix 'twin peg' guide, that also operates the steering. And braids that come through slots on the underside. Note Airfix logo moulded on the underside. And the previous owner cut a bit of plastic out between the 'oil' hole and the slot to clear the drive sprocket ( maybe to make it easier to lubricate ? ).
I revisited the Vanwall later, to repaint the wheels silver for an alloy finish (rather than the original chrome), to remove the screws originally visible holding the front wheels on (put the screws in from the back instead), and to change the front tyres to NOS Airfix ones of the original pattern.
