Mini 997S

scalextric mini cooper slot car

This is a commission build, replicating someone's real 1-to-1 car, and based on the Scalextric classic Mini Cooper.  The build is based on the above left and other pics, plus further information provided by the requester.  to the right is the Scalextric donor car.

Mods to the chassis include changing the steel wheels to Minilites by facing off with castings, made from a rubber print of a Minilite wheel, cast in P38 car filler.  The original bumpers with overriders have been replaced with plain Airfix / MRRC ones, and mudflaps added behine the rear wheels, plus a big-bore exhaust pipe underneath.

The shell - stripped, and repainted with silver rattle-can on the roof, plus a custom-made acrylic metallic off-red.  Also at the rear, the rounded rear lights replaced with the later squared-off type, plus the removal of one filler cap, plus the addition of a rear spot light, and number plate made up on the computer, and an 'Austin Cooper S' decal from a Patto's Place decal set.

The interior has been repainted black, and the colours of the crew's clothing changed.  A different roll cage has been made up, to match that on the original 1-to-1 car.

The shell - bonnet tie-downs and clips added, plus an oval Austin badge.  The radiator grille has been removed, and the interior mocked up, including the ubiquitous oil cooler.  As per the 1-to-1 car, there's just the top bar of the (later style) grille left on.  In front and in progress is a lighting bar, with two spotlights on.  And the front indicators have been improved - new ones made up from clear orange bits, from another slot car lighting set.

Finished -

Final details added are windscreen wipers, rear-view mirror on driver's door, and whip aerial on roof ( made from a nylon brush bristle, so it bends ).  Made up Cibie decals for the front spot lights; the number boards are simply masked-off areas sprayed white; the BL rosette is again from a Patto's Place decal set.  Chrome done with Bare-Metal foil, and everything glossed up and sealed down with Klear.
