Austin Healey 100/6 BN6

The original 'glue bomb' 1/32 scale built kit as received.

Whilst it looks like an Aurora Healey 3000, it's not. The make on the bottom is Playcraft ( UK ).

And it's a 100/6 BN6, 2.6 litre predecessor to the 3000, and also a pure 2-seater, not 2+2.

The kit was dismantled, stripped of all old paint, reassembled and filled.

The original windsreen was too badly damaged ( and wrong ), so a new one was scratchbuilt.

A Scalextric Metro donated the Mabuchi motor, motor mounts, rear axle & mounts, mated to the kit floorpan. Drive shaft is MRRC ( from Cobra ). The front ackermann steering unit is MRRC. The wheels are Airfix wires, from an E-type jag. Tyres are new MRRC.

Some Bare-metal foil has been applied.

Underside, shows screw mounts to join floorpan to body.

Copper foil under bonnet ( epoxied on ) acts as a heat sink above the motor, as motor is very close to bonnet.

Test assembly to make sure the major components fit together.

The wheels ( as said, from Airfix E-Type Jaguar ) were originally red plastic; they've been covered with chrome Bare-metal foil, and black-washed to bring out the spoke detail, and give them some depth.

Note interior door panels, motor blanking panel under dash. Also rear bumper - an extra 'shelf' of plastic card added, to glue bumper on to & reinforce it.

Finished -

The paint job is dark Prussian blue over pale grey ( Vallejo acrylics ).

The kit headlights were drilled out, lined with metal foil, and capped with clear plastic lenses.  The spotlights are slot car accessories.  The number plates were made up on computer.  The driver is a composite of bits from various WW2 1/32 and 1/35 soldier packs, and a lot of filler !

As to handling as a slot car, well it's got a front mounted motor and skinny tyres, so there's a lot of tail out on the corners.  Good fun though !

Some of the interior visible - covered spare wheel behind seats, gear lever knob etc.

This shows the nice cockpit shape of this 2-seater-only version. Some dashboard detail visible, and rearview mirror.

And finally a small tweak - didn't like the screws visible on the front wheels, so re-engineered to hide them by bringing them in from the back of the wheels instead, then adding a matching knock-off hubs as per the rear wheels.
